Historical Background: Hazrat Khwaja Banda Nawaz Gesu Daraz, born Syed Muhammad Hussaini on July 13, 1321, was a prominent Sufi saint of the Chishti Order. Known for his teachings on understanding, tolerance, and harmony among various religious groups, he was a disciple of Hazarath Khwaja Pir Naseeruddin Mahmood, also known as Chirag of Delhi. Khwaja Banda Nawaz played a crucial role in preaching Islam in 14th-century India. His extensive education in Islamic and Koranic studies, Arabic grammar, prophetic traditions, theology, law, jurisprudence, philosophy, and Sufism was guided by Chirag of Delhi. Invited by Bahamani King Firuz Shaha Bahamani, he settled in Kalburagi and spent the next 22 years spreading the message of universal brotherhood until his death at the age of 105 on November 1, 1422.

The magnificent Dargah building was constructed in the Indo-Saracenic style, showcasing a blend of these two cultural influences. The arches, a hallmark of Bahmani architecture, complement the Turkish and Iranian-inspired wall paintings and domes.
The Dargah Library houses approximately 10,000 books in Urdu, Persian, and Arabic, covering a wide range of subjects from history to literature. Additionally, the mosque near the tomb is attributed to Aurangzeb.
