Kalaburagi Fort

The Bahmani dynasty, which governed Kalburagi 600 years ago, left a significant architectural legacy in the region, notably in the form of the Kalburagi Fort. Covering 200 acres and stretching 3 kilometers, the fort features dual circular fortifications, with the inner wall towering over the outer one and a 30-feet deep moat between them. Over time, sections of both walls have deteriorated into rubble, prompting ongoing restoration efforts by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

Inside the fort, several historic monuments like the Jamia Mosque and Ranamandal stand, although many have suffered damage from neglect and vandalism. ASI conservation assistant Mouneshwar Kuravatti reported that 195 families had encroached upon the monument area, necessitating their relocation by the Kalburagi Urban Development Authority to enable restoration efforts.

Recent initiatives include the installation of a grass lawn and the reconstruction of the collapsed women’s mosque using traditional methods, avoiding modern materials to maintain architectural authenticity. However, a concrete base is being added around the Jamia Mosque for stability.

Today, Kalburagi  Fort stands as a testament to the region’s rich cultural heritage and architectural prowess, inviting visitors to explore its storied past. It serves not only as a tourist attraction but also as a symbol of historical continuity and pride for the local community, preserving centuries of history within its formidable walls.
